ActBlue is actually a political action committee (PAC) that takes an unorthodox approach to fundraising, by offering what what founder and president Benjamin Rahn calls "a comprehensive fundraising solution" to Democratic campaigns and anyone who wishes to fundraise for them. ActBlue is actually a political action committee (PAC) that takes an unorthodox approach to fundraising, by offering what what founder and president Benjamin Rahn calls "a comprehensive fundraising solution" to Democratic campaigns and anyone who wishes to fundraise for them. Accordingly, their unique tools should be consider as an alternative (or complement) to the fundraising fundraising software of traditional software vendors. ActBlue takes a community approach to fundraising. It serves a variety of different audiences and anyone can go to the site and start using ActBlue's tools -- it's a public space in addition to a web-based fundraising service. Using their web site, any supporter of Democratic candidates can set up a fundraising campaign and contribute money to the candidate of their choice. (ActBlue's success has inspired a Republican copy-cat called ABCPac RightRoots.)

About the Software:

ActBlue is an ASP (application service provider) and users access all its services through the company's website at www.actblue.com, so there are no setup costs. Campaign supporters can start a page on the site and start fundraising immediately. The site also supports "community fundraising," in which a campaign can invite others to set up their own fundraising pages, effectively creating a networked community of fundraisers rather than a traditional centralized fundraising model. This strategy is geared equally toward small and large campaigns. Small campaigns benefit by using ActBlue pages as their main web pages, and can start fundraising immediately. Larger campaigns benefit by giving fundraising control over to a community of supporters, engaging their supporters more deeply than a centralized website would.
In addition, members of the community can nominate -- "draft" in ActBlue parlance -- candidates for office and raise draft funds for that candidate. Those funds are held in escrow, and if the candidate decides to run, they will be given given to their campaign; if not, they will be given to the Democratic National Committee.
Fundraisers or organizations can also fundraise for multiple campaigns at a time by creating a fundraising page featuring several endorsed candidates. "From the donor's perspective it's a one-time credit card transaction," says Rahn, so this is an attractive option for campaigns who endorse multiple candidates.

Client Quick-take:
  • Using a private version of ActBlue's software in the 2006 campaign, Governor Deval Patrick (MA) raised $3.3 million, half of which came through individuals' and local groups' 570 fundraising pages.
  • Almost $1 million was donated to Senator Jim Webb (VA) through ActBlue.
  • John Edwards is using ActBlue for his 2008 presidential campaign's web-based fundraising.
  • The average contribution on ActBlue is $110 split between two candidates. The median contribution is $50.
Client Close-up:

From its launch in 2004 to the 2006 mid-term elections, ActBlue has sent over $17.4 million to over eleven hundred Democratic candidates and committees. "Our initial audience was independent campaign supporters," Rahn says. "But ActBlue helps solve professional fundraisers' problems as well as helping individuals participate." Beyond traditional fundraisers looking for more and deeper ways to connect with donors, ActBlue has become popular with individual "$20 donors" who want to have an influence on political campaigns. In addition to their fundraising capabilities, ActBlue provides progressive groups and individuals with technical, financial, and legal infrastructure.
