Blogging for Britain: we.gov.uk

Back at the end of June this year, I was invited over to PDF 2009 as one of the Google Fellows to experience the buzz and brains of the Personal Democracy Forum for the first time in person. And it didn’t disappoint. Whether hearing from Obama's Chief Informaiton Officer Vivek Kundra, being enthralled by Michael Wesch or dipping into the wide array of break out sessions, it was quite easily the most intellectually stimulating and inspiring conference I’ve ever been to.

So when offered the opportunity for myself and FutureGov to lend a hand in bringing PDF to Europe (only a hand I hasten to add – Javier Majan and his Catalan gang have been the energy behind working with Micah and Andrew to bring it over), I jumped at the chance.

Scheduled in for 20-21 November this year in beautiful Barcelona, I will be one of a number of bloggers from around Europe reporting on developments in the world of personal democracy in each of our countries and at a cross-European level over the next two months in the run up to the event itself.

Clearly I’ll be bringing you a UK perspective mostly, but don’t let that put you off ;-). We’ve got a lot going on to tell you about – from people powered politics to reinventing public services to civic and social innovation. Over the course of the next two months on the run up to the conference itself, we’ll be sharing some of the best from the UK in the world of digital engagement (the very British version of we.gov or Gov 20 as it’s known stateside!).

I intend to cover all the current big topics from open data and open government, digital democracy, the role of technology in political campaigning in the run up to the 2010 local and national elections, social innovation and citizen centred public services.

How does that sound – anything I’ve missed that you’d like to hear about? I’ll be speaking to a range of innovators in the field over the coming months and I’m keen to know who you would like to hear from – and I’ll see what I can do!

For now here’s an introduction to what we.gov means to the UK, why not check out Ivo Gormley’s film Us Now, a film project about the power of mass collaboration, government and the Internet here in Britain.
