Democracy in Action
Democracy In Action prides itself on being one of the only nonprofit organizations that provides a sophisticated, integrated online campaign platform to all nonprofits regardless of their economic reach. Democracy in Action, or DiA, was co-founded in June 2003 by April Pedersen and Chris Lundberg after they saw how only larger organizations with deep pockets could afford using the information and communication technology tools made available by other for-profit companies.
“Our economic model makes us perfect for the nonprofit that is just getting started or experiencing a transition,” says Jason Zanon, Director of Outreach and Development.
Washington, D.C.
DiA actually divides itself between its .org clients (nonprofits) and .com clients (consisting of PAC’s and political campaigns). The software is the same for both the only difference being price (which is by a case by case basis) and that for the .com clients DiA does not handle campaign funding or FEC filings. DiA’s software tools are a web-based ASP that runs the gamut of political online advocacy. The entire DiA Core Platform consists of all the things required to make any online campaign successful, and are designed to integrate easily with other web publication systems and offline databases. DiA tools are specially designed to help organizations engage their members and supporters more effectively and allow them to create campaigns that utilize timely alerts, newsletters and real-time reports and email blasts. All modules can be purchased individually or bulked together in the Core Platform.
Their advocacy campaign system automatically matches supporters to state and federal legislative targets by district and provides detailed tracking and reporting. The system easily allows users to forward these messages to friends and family, and their state and federal legislative databases ensure that folks can quickly identify their elected officials and that their messages are quickly delivered. Other tools include a fundraising module for easy and cost effective ways to receive credit card donations (.org clients only), surveys, questionnaires and sign up pages and forms.
In addition to the primary Democracy In Action components, the Democracy In Action Platform also contains a series of plug-and-play and standalone components. These can be inserted into pre-existing templates, or can stand on their own as separate pages. DiA’s sign up pages can be made to match the look and feel of your website and sort supporters into specific groups upon signup. Surveys and questionnaire tools allow you to gather supporter information through surveys and questionnaires that can be distributed via email blasts, advocacy campaigns or content pages. Other interactive web features include “tell-a friend pages” and volunteer sign up pages that allow campaigns to easily track volunteers based on fields of interest, location and or availability. The only module that is not included in DiA’s standard core platform is their Event or “Meet Up” Tool that allows supporters and administrators the ability to create and manage events or house parties, and allows other supporters to then take part in those events.
- Brave New Films uses DiA’s “Meet Up Tools” to allow activists to host screenings of new films such as Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price.
- The Gulf Restoration Network used DiA’s Core Platform to flood Washington with emails urging the President to make a real commitment to Louisiana’s coast and communities.
On the nonprofit side, DemocracyInAction is especially geared towards supporting organizations from a broad spectrum of issues and sizes that are engaged in providing for the public good. Most organizations fall under the following issue areas: Environment and Sustainable Development, Human Rights, Peace, Hunger, Education and Health. Similarly, DiA’s for-profit .com side is meant to help advance the “progressive political agenda.”
