Since its inception in 1999, Kintera has grown organically as well as through its acquisition of Carol/Trevelyan Strategy Group (CTSG), a consulting firm that provides Web design and strategy services in conjunction with Kintera’s technology products to progressive clients like Amnesty International and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (in 2004). Despite the CTSG affiliation, Kintera serves clients from across the political spectrum, focusing on the general nonprofit market.

Despite the CTSG affiliation, Kintera serves clients from across the political spectrum, focusing on the general nonprofit market. Kintera is the only public company serving the political nonprofit and campaign market, and Greg Nelson, VP and general manager for politics and policy at Kintera believes this has helped the firm build its strengths: “Being a public company, we’ve been able to invest significant money in our infrastructure,” he says, noting that such backend Web infrastructure capabilities have been especially important during relief efforts for emergencies such as Hurricane Katrina.

About the Software:

Kintera offers its software as a hosted ASP, so it is accessible via the Internet with no installation required. Well-known for its patented Friends Asking Friends grassroots community-building tool, Kintera aims to be a complete fundraising, marketing and events solution for its clients. Its integrated software products are sold under the Kintera Sphere brand based on customer needs. Like other ASP solutions, Kintera’s products are integrated, so as clients add on new tools, they can share data to enable unified functionality. For example, explains Nelson, this allows clients who recognize that a particular supporter has taken action on a specific campaign to follow-up with a personalized fundraising appeal for the same cause.
The company’s 14 product modules include Kintera Contact Relationship Management, a unified relational database for collecting, segmenting, analyzing and using constituent information; Kintera’s Friends Asking Friends technology, which allows volunteers to set up personalized Web pages to facilitate grassroots communities and fundraising; Kintera Advocacy, which uses Internet technology and traditional advocacy strategies to grow clients’ advocate bases and amplify advocacy efforts; and Kintera Volunteer Management, which provides tools for management and tracking leadership and volunteer programs. The company also has integrated tools for website content management, ecommerce, auctions, online fundraising, email newsletter, fax and letter writing, as well as products for managing internal operations through calendars, task managers, and reporting.

Client Quick-take:
  • Grassroots Democrats use Kintera’s tools for content management, fundraising, email and events management.
  • The Drug Policy Alliance uses its tools for advocacy, donation, content management and contact relationship management.
Client Close-up:

Kintera divides its clients among four main categories: Education, Faith, Health and Human Services and, its second-largest client sector, Politics and Public Policy. The company focuses on serving large national organizations and their regional divisions and affiliates that typically purchase software through multi-year contracts, or priced based on election cycle for political campaigns. Kintera’s content management tools allowed The International Fund for Animal Welfare to customize its website content to best appeal to particular supporters. Based on the types of animals site visitors express interest in—from domestic dogs and cats to endangered exotic wildlife and marine animals—the website’s graphics change. Communications like direct mail and email fundraising appeals are also personalized to focus on the recipient’s animal preference.
