The Times on Facebook and Philanthropy
By Joshua Levy, 11/12/2007 - 1:39pm

A good piece in today’s New York Times looks at the frenetic amount of philanthropy taking place online, with a particular look at how young people are using Facebook.

It includes a quote from PdF contributor Allison Fine. “Web 1.0 was a broadcast phenomenon; the Clinton Global Initiative would have just told us what it was doing,” Allison told Times reporter Alan Krauss. “Now, in this new interactive world, it’s a two-way conversation.”

The article centers on the activism of Nick Anderson and Ana Slavin, who have used Facebook to raise over $300,000 for Darfur.

While Krauss focuses on Facebook’s Causes app in the piece, it should be pointed out that other sites like Change.org, Razoo, and Kiva are getting into the game too.

If you haven't already, check out Peter Deitz's feature for PdF a couple of months ago on using Facebook, and other sites, for fundraising. It’s good to see this idea taking off!
