"Use Your Blank for Good": NYC Launches Citizen-Centered Service Initiative

Inspired by President Obama's call to service and timed to roll out alongside the new Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg's NYCService.org matches the city's ready and willing citizens to volunteer opportunities aligned with their interests and preferences. Indeed, with a slick and easily navigable interface in Daily Kos-ian orange, the site sure does serves up volunteer opportunities in a way that makes serving as an "eco-happy docent" or leading a disaster preparedness workshop pretty appealing.

New Yorkers are invited to created a volunteerism profile that emails them when volunteer opportunities matching their individual tastes become available. Online toolkits set up the more independent-minded among us to design our own volunteer activities.

Bloomberg's volunteer site might serve to inspire its own role model. USAService.org, Obama's citizen service site, has lagged a bit since his team used it to organize events around inauguration weekend.
